One of the hardest jobs for a Committee is, not keeping going what is already in place, but coming up with ideas, which keep the members interested.
In February, two members from Bognor Camera Club made the journey to Selsey to address our members and show them some DPI’s, which had been entered into competitions at Bognor.
Chairman Rob De Ruiter LRPS and PDI Competition Secretary Graham Balkwill started the evening off by telling us a little about their club and how they run their competitions. Unlike Selsey, their PDI competitions have two divisions, Advanced and others. Likewise, their print competitions are divided into three divisions, Advanced, Intermediate and others. They also keep a league table and each year, three people go up from the lower division to the higher division. To keep things on an even keel, the three that don’t keep up their marks in the upper league go down.
Once that was out of the way the evening started proper, but not before Rob, who was doing the talking, made a point of explaining that he wanted lots of audience participation. In case you are wondering, Graham was doing the technical bits, operating the computer.
It was an interesting concept. Rob explained about the image being shown and what marks it achieved in the competition. He then gave his opinion on what marks he thought it should have got, often with his opinion of the image. Our members joined in giving their thoughts on both the image content and what they thought of the judge’s comments and marking. Unlike a normal competition evening where it is the judge only giving his opinion, it was a two-sided conversation. It made for a very enjoyable and informative evening.
Speaking to them at the end of the evening they said they are using the same concept at Bognor but have invited a judge. Members will enter images but without names or titles. The idea being that the judge and audience will then discuss the merits of each image.
