• “Coast 17” – A Talk by Ken Scott ARPS

Our 2019/2020 season opened on the evening of 2nd September with an a very interesting and absorbing illustrated talk by the well-known West Sussex photographer Ken Scott.

Ken described how he set out in 2017 to walk around the coast of Britain. Despite being plagued by recurring shin splint injuries and enforced recovery breaks, Ken managed to cover 3000 kilometres in 107 days from Shoreham-by-sea to Plymouth, from Minehead to the Severn Crossing and around Wales to Caernarfon, from the Wirral to the Solway in Cumbria and from Berwick-upon-Tweed down the east coast to London and back to Shoreham.

Ken described his epic journey in great detail and illustrated it with numerous photos of the places he had visited including some amazing coastal and industrial landscapes, art installations, wildlife, ferries & bridges, some rather worrying scenes of plastic pollution and a number of interesting people he had met along the way. He also gave us three short audio-visual shows that focused on close-ups of fascinating items seen on beaches, a moving sequence of seascapes sharing a common horizon on the screen and the interesting people he had encountered including those who had supported him on his adventure.

This was an enthralling session for the members present and concluded with a sincere vote of thanks from club president David Nicholls. We certainly hope it will be possible to welcome back Ken Scott to our club before too long.
