• Barbers Trophy - Open PDI Competition

Eighteen members attended St Wilfrid's Church Hall on the 18th March for our annual open digital competition for the Barbers Trophy. We were also joined by Mike Warren ARPS, our judge for the evening.

Following agreement at the AGM three years ago, the competition has since been run in two separate parts: Advanced Class for those members who have won a trophy during the previous season, and Club Class for other members. In this way there will be two winners, one for each section, each sharing the Barbers Trophy.

This competition is always enormously popular with our members, due in no small part to the digital nature of the competition and the fact that the subject matter is completely open. Therefore, not surprisingly, by the competition deadline, Dick Read, (our digital manager), had received no fewer than seventy-two entries altogether: twenty-eight for the Advanced Class and forty-four for the Club Class.

Our judge carefully considered each image in turn, drawing attention to the good attributes whilst giving constructive feedback on aspects that could have been improved. In doing so, he drew attention to the pictorial and story-telling qualities portrayed in an image; a picture's exposure and contrast; the use of cropping to improve a picture's composition; and the use of vignetting when this could bring greater emphasis to the subject of the picture.

In each case, a mark out of twenty was also awarded, although for four pictures in the Advanced Class and four in the Club Class, this judgement was held back until later in order to allow time for further consideration.

By the close of the first half, fourteen Advanced Class PDIs had been awarded eighteen marks or more, thus qualifying those photographers with certificates of merit. Of those, Mike gave the maximum twenty marks to the following PDIs: "GREAT BLACK BACKED GULL TAKING OFF WITH THE BAIT" by Martin Thomas, “HE AIN’T HEAVY” by Dick Read, “HANG ON” by Dave Johnson and “HOVERFLY IN FLIGHT” by Bob Hoare. Of these, Mike announced that the overall winner of the Advanced Class would be Bob Hoare for his beautifully caught picture of a hoverfly.

Following the usual break for tea and chat, the second half of the evening continued with Mike judging the forty-four Club Class PDIs. By the end, no fewer than seventeen had qualified for certificates of merit, and of those, three had been awarded the maximum twenty marks as follows: "BIG BIRD" by Pony Moore, "BABY GREEN WOODPECKER" by Margaret Cooper, and "THE FACE OF EXTINCTION" by David Richardson. Of the three, David's rather eerie picture of wild animal bones in a deserted place was declared the Club Class winner.

Warmest congratulations therefore to our two winners, Bob Hoare and David Richardson; our grateful thanks to Mike Warren for his expert judging; and our thanks also to all our members for entering such a varied collection of pictures, giving us a most interesting and successful evening.
