• Inter-Club Competiton - Selsey Vs Hayling Island

A good crowd of members from both clubs gathered together in St Wilfrid's Church Hall on Monday 8th April for this annual event. We were also joined by Bob Webzell ARPS, from Brighton and Hove Camera Club, our judge for the evening.

The first part of the competition involved the judging of twelve projected digital images from each club. Bob considered each one carefully, giving constructive criticism plus a mark out of twenty. The vast majority received very high marks including one Hayling Island image and two of Selsey’s that gained the maximum twenty marks.

By the half time interval, Hayling were ahead with 220 points to our 216. However, we then had an opportunity to enjoy some tasty refreshments provided and served by Louise Satturley and Anne Johnson whilst catching up with fellow photographers from Hayling Island Camera Club. Before re-starting, the prize-winning numbers for our fortnightly raffle, organised by Beryl James, were expertly called by Bob Hoare.

The second half of the evening’s competition consisted of twelve prints from each club being placed alternately in the light box for all to see by Andrew Kendon, and for Bob Webzell to comment upon and judge. Once again, very helpful feedback was given by Bob including the value of a soft focus when it was appropriate to the subject of the picture, and the importance of good quality printing with this format.

Once again, very high marks were awarded to each club, such was the quality of work being viewed. Bob held back a total of nine prints for further consideration, five from Hayling and four from Selsey, all of which were eventually awarded nineteen or twenty marks. Once the print scores had been added, Hayling stood at 221 with Selsey four adrift on 217. Furthermore, once the PDI totals were added on, Selsey's grand total was 433 whereas Hayling's stood at 441, thus making Hayling Island Camera Club the overall winner.

The evening rounded off with Selsey’s Chairman and Hayling’s President expressing their thanks to Bob Webzell for his wise judging, to Louise Satturley for organising the half time refreshments, to Andrew Kendon and Dick Read for managing the prints and PDIs, and to all the contributing photographers whose work we thoroughly enjoyed seeing throughout the evening.

Once again, another very successful joint meeting concluded in which we certainly enjoyed the company of our friends from Hayling Island Camera Club and the sight of forty-eight great pictures.
