• Outdoor Shoot at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth

Six club members gathered by the Spinnaker Tower at Gunwharf Quays on Monday 6th November for the annual club night shoot. However, in anticipation of favourable late afternoon lighting conditions, several members arrived early, and, taking advantage of the Gosport ferry, travelled over to that side to photograph the Portsmouth harbour front.

As the afternoon drew to a close, we took further photographs on the Portsmouth side by the HMS Warrior. By then the tide was at its lowest which gave good opportunities to photograph small craft sitting on shiny mud banks by the shore. We then took a break for tea and cake while nightfall enveloped Gunwharf before exploring its night time photographic opportunities.

The whole area was certainly well lit with Christmas decorations adorning the water front and shopping arcades, and there were also attractive reflections to capture on the water in the harbour and in the still pools leading up to the Gunwharf Tower "Lipstick" Building. Overseeing the whole area, the Spinnaker Tower was very well lit and constantly appeared in our viewfinders as we worked our way around the site.

An added bonus was the full moon which appeared in the sky to the north shortly before we concluded the shoot and retired to The Old Customs House for a swift drink before heading home.

As always, this was a fascinating session. It presented challenges to us all in terms of the changing light conditions whilst presenting numerous opportunities for compositions that reflect the visual essence of Gunwharf Quays. Despite us all being present at the same time and in the same place, I am sure we have all returned home having seen and captured a variety of different photographic images. No doubt, all will be revealed when we meet on the 13th November to view our results.
