• The Annual M.S.W. Competition

This long-standing event is so named as it brings together Middleton, Selsey and Witterings Camera Clubs once a year for an open PDI competition. As it was the turn of our Middleton friends to host this event on the 2nd March, ten Selsey members made the journey to the Jubilee Hall venue in Elmer Road, Middleton-on-Sea.

This competition was frequently won by Selsey back in the 1990s, but we haven't brought home the MSW trophy since 2004. Bearing that in mind, we had chosen our twenty digital images with a great deal of care, and were feeling reasonably hopeful of success at the start of the evening !

Our judge for the evening was Hilly Hoar, the President of Midhurst Camera Club. Without the usual preview, the evening got underway with each of the sixty images being projected to enable Hilly to sum up what she felt were the strengths and weaknesses of each picture and to give a mark out of twenty.

A break for refreshments was called after the first thirty images had been judged. This provided an opportunity for us all to socialise and enjoy the splendid spread of refreshments laid on by the Middleton members. Winning raffle tickets for a considerable variety of prizes were also drawn during the interval.

The second half proceeded with further constructive criticism and marks from Hilly. She frequently drew attention to a picture’s composition, exposure and saturation as well as drawing attention to overexposed parts in some images plus the need for cropping in several cases. Following the judging of the 60th image, there followed a few moments of bated breath while the Middleton laptop crunched out the final results, which were as follows: Middleton Camera Club 375 marks, Selsey Camera Club 356 marks and Witterings Camera Club 354 marks.

Sadly we didn't win the competition on this occasion, rather accepting second place as we did last year. However, more importantly, by the end of the evening we had all enjoyed the sight of sixty strong images and the pleasant company of other like-minded photographic enthusiasts.

Our grateful thanks to all the photographers who contributed their images, to Hilly Hoar for applying her photographic wisdom to each PDI and sharing it with us, and to Middleton Camera Club for organising another very successful MSW event.
